No big news there \u2014 we\u2019ve known that health tracks wealth for quite some time now.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s what we haven\u2019t known: The life-expectancy gap between rich and poor in the United States is actually accelerating.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2001, American men among the nation\u2019s most affluent 5 percent have seen their lifespans increase by more than two years. American women in that bracket have registered an almost three-year extension to their life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the poorest five percent of Americans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-04-11\/join-the-one-percent-and-live-a-decade-longer\">have seen essentially<\/a> no gains at all.<\/p>\n<p>Now a three-year gain in average lifespan might not, at first glance, seem earth-shakingly significant. But consider this: If doctors could by some miracle suddenly cure all cancer, federal health officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/04\/160411134552.htm\">tell us<\/a>, the average overall American life expectancy would increase by just three years.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, as MIT\u2019s Michael Stepner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2016\/04\/160411134552.htm\">puts it<\/a>, the changes in life expectancy we\u2019ve witnessed over the last 15 years rank as \u201cthe equivalent of the richest Americans winning the war on cancer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2016\/04\/21\/the-death-gap\/\">The Death Gap<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rich people live longer than poor people.
