Grandma Harken lived on the edge of town, in a house with its back to the desert.<\/p>\n

Some people said that she lived out there because she liked her privacy, and some said that it was because she did black magic in secret. Some said that she just didn\u2019t care for other people, and they were probably the closest to the truth.<\/p>\n

When her daughter Eva asked her to move into town, to be a little closer, Grandma Harken refused. It got to be a regular ritual with them\u2014\u201cMother, won\u2019t you move in a little closer? I worry about you out there alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going to bother me out here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could step on a rattlesnake,\u201d said Eva.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d rather get bit by a rattlesnake than the neighbors,\u201d said Grandma Harken. \u201cI get enough people coming whining to me as it is. As it is, some of \u2018em get tired and turn around. A twenty minute walk has its advantages.\u201d She held up a needle and threaded it on the first try. \u201cBesides, I can still see what I\u2019m doing. Talk to me when I\u2019ve gone blind.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
