On the stage behind large stacks of computers and gear, three large, serene dudes that go by the name <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/a-tribe-called-red\" target=\"_blank\">A Tribe Called Red <\/a>bounce up and down as they play a ferocious remix of their track &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YJLydQB6BxU\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Power<\/a>&#8221; made by Monterrey, Mexico based producer    <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/djjavierestrada\" target=\"_blank\">Javier Estrada<\/a>, along with a stream of rap, dancehall, cumbia and miscellaneous unknown vicious<br \/>    styles.  The video projectors show a montage of cut ups of Hollywood Native cliches interspersed with traditional symbols and electric design.  It&#8217;s a<br \/>    hip-hop party, it&#8217;s an &#8220;Electric Pow Wow&#8221;, to use the name of the group&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.babylonclub.ca\/?page_id=5\" target=\"_blank\">party night in Ottawa<\/a>; it&#8217;s<br \/>    21st century <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cosmopolitanism\" target=\"_blank\">cosmopolitanism <\/a>in full effect: a perfect example of the bringing together of<br \/>    worlds that is Global Bass.<br \/><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>    Global Bass (a.k.a transnational bass or sometimes tropical bass) is probably most familiar to the world via the work of UK MC of Sri Lankan descent M.I.A.<br \/>    and her sometime collaborator, US DJ and producer Diplo who on tracks like &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2LFdPVf1diw\" target=\"_blank\">Bucky Done Gun&#8221; <\/a><br \/>    created a wildly successful sonic collage of digital dancehall styles from around the world, topped off with an anti-globalization rhetoric that celebrated<br \/>    the dancehall pleasures of subaltern populations around the world.  While commercially and artistically successful, MIA and Diplo have also been intensely<br \/>criticized for the    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.racialicious.com\/2011\/04\/13\/it%E2%80%99s-complicated-djs-appropriation-and-a-whole-host-of-other-ish\/\" target=\"_blank\">cultural theft <\/a>of styles<br \/>which do not belong to them, and for a    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/30\/magazine\/30mia-t.html?_r=1&#038;ref=magazine\" target=\"_blank\">vacuous political rhetoric <\/a>which ultimately goes no further<br \/>    than a feelgood sentiment of opposition which fits neatly into the marketplace for all things alternative and independent.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>    Beneath that story however is a thriving scene or rather group of networked scenes which is both global and bassed in very interesting and ever evolving<br \/>    ways.
