\nThe expected effects of climate change, according to organizations like the IPCC<\/a> and the World Bank<\/a>, are fairly terrifying.<\/p>\n
They suggest the planet\u2019s climate will change fast enough to cause widespread droughts and famines, the spread of insect-borne diseases<\/a>, the displacement of populations, and a worsening of severe poverty.<\/p>\n
But here\u2019s one thing they don\u2019t predict: mass civilizational collapse.<\/p>\n
Most models warn that as a result of climate change, the incredibly rapid progress<\/a>
\nhumanity has been making in life expectancies and in ending extreme
\npoverty will stall; we could even lose decades of the progress we\u2019ve
\nmade. If extreme poverty gets as bad as it was in 1980 due to climate
\nchange, that will be an immeasurable humanitarian failure, and hundreds
\nof millions of people will die. But the 1980s definitely did have human
\ncivilization, and the future in this version would too.<\/p>\nAnother way of looking at it is that the predicted
\neffects of climate change are very bad, but not in a cinematic way. Sea
\nlevels will rise, but not up to the Statue of Liberty\u2019s neck (if all the
\nice in the world melted, sea levels would rise to approximately the statue\u2019s waist<\/a>).
\nLots of people will die, most of them low-income. It\u2019s not surprising
\nthat this gets less viral attention than extreme, extinction-focused
\nscenarios.<\/p>\nBut that isn\u2019t to say extreme scenarios are made up from
\nnothing. Where do some people conclude that climate change might swallow
\nup civilization itself?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
