It&#8217;s really hard for people to accept that something has genuinely improved, and they don&#8217;t need to fight so hard for it anymore (and can turn more attention to things that <em>haven&#8217;t<\/em> improved).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do we think that a problem persists even when it has become less frequent? Levari <em>et al.<\/em><br \/>\nshow experimentally that when the \u201csignal\u201d a person is searching for<br \/>\nbecomes rare, the person naturally responds by broadening his or her<br \/>\ndefinition of the signal\u2014and therefore continues to find it even when it<br \/>\nis not there. From low-level perception of color to higher-level<br \/>\njudgments of ethics, there is a robust tendency for perceptual and<br \/>\njudgmental standards to \u201ccreep\u201d when they ought not to. For example,<br \/>\nwhen blue dots become rare, participants start calling purple dots blue,<br \/>\nand when threatening faces become rare, participants start calling<br \/>\nneutral faces threatening.
