I arrived in San Juan on July 26, four days after Rossell\u00f3 had
\nannounced his resignation, and everyone seemed convinced that a new
\nPuerto Rico was being born. \u201cI had nearly given up,\u201d said Jos\u00e9, a
\nrestaurant manager whose design studio went bankrupt after Hurricane
\nMaria. \u201cThe citizens of a colony are now teaching the citizens of the
\nempire what people power can do,\u201d wrote my friend Christine Nieves, an
\norganizer on the island\u2019s eastern end. Sugeily Rodr\u00edguez Lebr\u00f3n, a
\nperformer with the radical artistic collective AgitArte<\/a>, told me she had waited for this moment her entire life. <\/p>\n

The protesters had done more than boot Rossell\u00f3 from office. They
\nwanted the head of every politician that had cheated and mocked the
\nisland, whether or not they had taken part in the recently leaked texts
\nand chat messages between the governor and senior officials. \u201cClean the
\nhouse,\u201d the slogan went, and by the day, protesters improvised new
\nchants savaging each potential Rossell\u00f3 heir apparent. Protesters
\nrepudiated Puerto Rico\u2019s two-party system as a corrupt Punch-and-Judy
\nshow in which each side took turns to build their patronage networks and
\nmade empty promises of either statehood or greater autonomy; and they
\nrejected, too, the neocolonial Fiscal Control Board imposed by Congress
\nin Washington, D.C., that has been wrecking the island\u2019s economy with
\nausterity measures in order to service unpayable, possibly illegal
\ndebts.<\/p>\n

The protests had revealed, in the words of Puerto Rican writer Ana Teresa Toro<\/a>, \u201cthe true social animal that we are: a beast that is joyous, wild, indocile and untamed, that has slept\u2026 until now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
