She&#8217;s a scientist studying moss, and is Native American, and manages to combine the scientific tradition with native spiritual &amp; botanical traditions in a remarkably coherent way, much more so than most attempts I&#8217;ve seen to bridge that divide.<\/li><li>Cory Doctorow&#8217;s <em>Walkaway<\/em> (2017), about a group of people trying to build something good around the margins of dystopian culture; strongly influenced by burner and maker culture.<\/li><li>N. K. Jemisin, <em>The Fifth Season<\/em> &amp; sequellae. More fantasy. These are terrific: really innovative worldbuilding and a great protagonist.<\/li><li>Ted Chiang, <em>Exhalation: Stories<\/em>. One of contemporary science fiction&#8217;s finest and least prolific authors; he seems to publish a couple of stories a year.
