It\u2019s certainly better than I\u2019ve thought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ck4ek1ndb00183h62mc9aljat@published\" data-word-count=\"96\">You may not have noticed it, amid the flood of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/26\/climate\/greenhouse-gas-emissions-carbon.html\">bad news about the \u201cEmissions Gap\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2019\/12\/cop25-ended-in-failure-whats-the-way-forward.html\">the collapse of the COP25 climate conference in Madrid<\/a>, but over the last few weeks a new narrative about the climate future has emerged, on balance encouraging, at least to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Uninhabitable-Earth-Life-After-Warming\/dp\/0525576703\/ref=zg_bs_16053231_1?_encoding=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;refRID=MEKMC51CMHBP2YAHZNM6&amp;ascsubtag=[]in[p]ck4ek0ekn000qsryem0fffr57[i]undefined[d]D[z]m[t]w\" data-track-type=\"product-link\" data-track-id=\"undefined\">an alarmist like me<\/a>. It is this: As best as we can understand and project the medium- and long-term trajectories of energy use and emissions, the window of possible climate futures is probably narrowing, with both the most optimistic scenarios and the most pessimistic ones seeming, now, less likely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"nymag.com\/intelligencer\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/ck4ek1pev001e3h625249x0sf@published\" data-word-count=\"47\">That narrowing contains both good and bad news \u2014 what was recently the best to hope for now seems vanishingly unlikely, and what was the worst to fear much less likely, too.
