The NYT has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/15\/us\/coronavirus-testing-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">update<\/a> on testing today as well. And you can see state-by-state testing updates <a href=\"https:\/\/covidtracking.com\/data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at covidtracking.com<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p>I wonder what is the percentage of testing is, that constitutes adequate surveillance? \u00a0anyone know?<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><br \/>I&#8217;ve seen numbers ranging from 150k\/day to 22 million\/day (in that Vox piece, from Paul Romer &#8212; by far the highest I&#8217;ve seen).My thought would be that it depends dramatically on the situation &#8212; if we&#8217;ve managed to get fully past this first outbreak and we&#8217;re just stamping out small local outbreaks with testing &amp; tracing, the number could be pretty low. If it&#8217;s still everywhere and we&#8217;re trying to open things back up, we would need an enormous number.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Other stuff I&#8217;ve read in the past few days that may or may not be of interest (none of them are urgent):<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>James Heathers <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jamesheathers\/hurry-dont-rush-e1aee626e733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">describes<\/a> why we can&#8217;t rush into treatments like hydroxychloroquine without thorough testing first, by looking at the history of bone marrow transplants as an example of how that can go badly wrong.<\/li>\r\n<li>UnHerd <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2020\/04\/jury-still-out-on-swedish-coronavirus-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argues<\/a> that things are actually going fairly well in Sweden (with much less lockdown).<\/li>\r\n<li>UnHerd <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2020\/04\/how-long-will-lockdown-last\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tries to consider<\/a> how long lockdown can last politically (somewhat UK-centric but applies well to the US too).<\/li>\r\n<li>Rolling Stone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/corona-exhausted-moral-fatigue-974311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thinks<\/a> that the main reason the current situation is so exhausting is that our day-to-day decisions carry way more moral weight than usual.<\/li>\r\n<li>SlateStarCodex <a href=\"https:\/\/slatestarcodex.com\/2020\/04\/14\/a-failure-but-not-of-prediction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigates<\/a> who did a good or bad job predicting this situation, and why.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Vox article on testing is really good.
