{"id":4981,"date":"2021-02-28T18:16:28","date_gmt":"2021-02-28T18:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.novonon.com\/blog\/?p=4981"},"modified":"2021-02-28T18:16:28","modified_gmt":"2021-02-28T18:16:28","slug":"the-narrative-and-its-discontents-quillette","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.novonon.com\/blog\/2021\/02\/28\/the-narrative-and-its-discontents-quillette\/","title":{"rendered":"The Narrative and Its Discontents \u2013 Quillette"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The whole essay may not be worth reading for most, but I wanted to call out these bits where he gives some of the more amusing and\/or troubling recent excesses of the journalistic consensus given in NYT, WaPo, etc:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Consider, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/02\/01\/technology-202-new-report-calls-conservative-claims-social-media-censorship-a-form-disinformation\/\">a <em>Washington Post<\/em> story<\/a> about a New York University report calling claims of conservative censorship on social media \u201ca form of disinformation.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5b6df958f8370af3217d4178\/t\/60187b5f45762e708708c8e9\/1612217185240\/NYU+False+Accusation_2.pdf\">The report<\/a> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The claim of anti-conservative animus is itself a form of disinformation: a falsehood with no reliable evidence to support it. No trustworthy large-scale studies have determined that conservative content is being removed for ideological reasons.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What I find troubling about that one is that it demonstrates how the term &#8220;disinformation&#8221; is being stretched lately to cover way too much.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m posting this next section specifically for the links:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As The Narrative gets more things wrong, the enforcement has become increasingly Kafkaesque. Today, you\u2019ll get banned on social media <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zeynep\/status\/1358849641756917760\">for sharing statements<\/a> by the WHO from a few months ago, or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zeynep\/status\/1358844175085686788\">unedited vaccine trial results<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikeIsaac\/status\/1358876922034311169\">on grounds of contradicting the WHO<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5936036\/secret-2020-election-campaign\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=editorial&amp;utm_term=politics_2020-election&amp;linkId=110717147\">This week\u2019s front-page news<\/a> was last week\u2019s cancel-worthy conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>In the face of the public\u2019s revolt, there is a growing inclination in the media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/journalism-advocacy-over-reporting\">to jettison objectivity<\/a> in favor of antagonism. <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2020\/11\/inside-the-new-york-times-heated-reckoning-with-itself.html\">As a <em>Times<\/em> staffer said<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019re at a barricades moment in our history. You decide: which side are you on?\u201d According to The Narrative, there are only two sides: for or against The Narrative. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Out-group_homogeneity\">Everyone on the other side is the same<\/a>.
